CCAP Sponsors Mayor’s Unity Cup Again for 2019

Mayor Jim Kenney (upper right in green sweatshirt) shares in Liberia’s celebration following 4-3 victory over Ivory Coast in 2018 Final.

During the Fall of 2016, Mayor Jim Kenney inaugurated the Philadelphia International Unity Cup (www.unitycup.phila.gov), a neighborhood-based, city-wide soccer tournament. Modeled after the FIFA World Cup, each team represents a particular country – utilizing the universal language of sport to bring people together and to showcase Philadelphia’s rich cultural diversity. Since then, the number of competitors has grown each year and so has the community support.

In 2019, the field will include 52 teams, divided into 13 groups of four teams each, for a World Cup-style Group Stage during the month of August. Twenty-six teams will then proceed to the Knockout Stage, culminating in a championship game on October 12 at Talen Energy Stadium, home of the Philadelphia Union. Given the participation of 21 CCAP Member countries and the international spirit of the program, the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia has enthusiastically sponsored the Unity Cup during all four years of its existence.

Consul Kerber Promoted to Consul General of Houston

Alicia G. Kerber-Palma, Head Consul of Mexico in Philadelphia

The Philadelphia diplomatic community has reacted with mixed feelings to the recent news of Alicia Kerber’s transfer to Houston, Texas where she will assume responsibilities of Consul General of Mexico in June, 2019. Clearly this promotion to one of Mexico’s most strategic consular posts in the United States is evidence of Consul Kerber’s great work in Philadelphia and throughout her career. In less than three years, she has become a dynamic leader of Mexico’s large local population and an integral participant in our consular organization and she will be sorely missed. Good luck to Alicia and her family!

HC Scullin Delivers French Alliance Day Address

Hon. Consul of France Michael Scullin recently presented the keynote address at French Alliance Day at Valley Forge Washington Memorial Chapel. Each year the congregation commemorates the date in May of 1778 when George Washington and the troops at Valley Forge, after a terrible winter, learned that the King of France had entered a treaty of Alliance with the Americans. Benjamin Franklin, our region’s adoptive son, had spent over a year in France charming and beseeching the King to intercede on behalf of the rebels, an unusual alliance in the making. Eventually Franklin prevailed, and the King’s support was won.

This news undoubtedly ignited the troops, boosting morale at a crucial time. It also meant a dramatic change in the war. Previous support from the Marquis de Lafayette had been substantial and important. But the French soon arrived en masse under the command of the Compte de Rochambeau, with thousands of troops, and matériel, and silver. At Yorktown, the scene of the final and decisive events of the American quest for independence, it has been observed that there more French troops than there were American troops. French support was decisive to the American victory.

The event also provides the French an opportunity to reiterate their enduring appreciation for American sacrifices in the First and Second World Wars.

A Day at the State Capitol

In response to a generous invitation from State Secretary Pedro Cortes, 30 Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia Members and guests traveled to Harrisburg on April 13 for an extraordinary experience, including the following highlights:

  • Remarkable “red carpet treatment” by Secretary Cortes, his cabinet colleagues and his staff which included a coordinated schedule with top members of Pennsylvania’s governmental leadership.
  • A full forty minute conversation with Governor Wolf who provided general comments regarding the importance of foreign trade and investment, interacted individually with various CCAP Members and participated in a brief ceremony with visiting Chilean dignitaries.
  • A meeting with Philadelphia’s delegation to the House of Representatives, followed by Speaker Michael Turzai’s formal recognition of CCAP in the historic House Chamber and individual introductions of each group member to the full House in session.
  • A similar recognition by Lieutenant Governor Michael Stack on the floor of the equally impressive Senate Chamber where CCAP President Longstreth provided brief remarks to the seated Senators, followed by a private meeting in Lt. Governor Stack’s office.
  • A luncheon which included informal conversation among Members and guests followed by a useful discussion with David Briel, Director of International Business with DCED, who described state programs to support his department.

In closing, our day in Harrisburg set a new CCAP standard for governmental engagement and established relationships which can enhance the future effectiveness of individual consuls.
