HC Franklin Reflects on the Queen and the King

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and Forfar, youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II and brother of King Charles III, hosts Oliver St. Clair Franklin CBE, Honorary Consul of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Philadelphia, at Buckingham Palace

Much of Oliver Franklin’s life, his studies at Oxford University and his many years as Honorary Consul of the United Kingdom all occurred during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Now with her passing on September 8, 2022, he reflects on his contact with her Majesty, the British royal family and England’s future under King Charles III:

“I have only met her late Majesty once during a garden party in 2018. Garden Parties are held at Buckingham Palace in June to celebrate the monarch’s birthday. Invitation is by lottery and people involved in charities are invited to apply. So, there’re a lot of people, from all sectors of society, all very pleased to be dining on cucumber sandwiches, walking the grounds, and admiring the rose gardens. Some guests are ‘presented’ to the Queen as she walks from the palace to the Royal tent. I stared as Her Majesty approached me and, like most people, didn’t know what to say. She smiled said hello and hearing my reply asked if I was an American. “Ah Philadelphia” she said,” lovely city, very historical,” and she moved on. That was it, but a moment I shall never forget.

Last May, Prince Edward invited me to attend the Platinum Jubilee Garden Party. It was a glorious Wednesday afternoon. Buckingham Palace stood majestic against the clouds and the guest, all doing good works, walked amongst the grounds. The Queen was not in attendance but Prince Edward, the Countess of Wessex and the Princess of Wales were there meeting and greeting the guest. I was struck by the quietness, and reverence with which the Brits greeted their Royals. But a slight pall of melancholy and thankfulness descended over the Palace grounds as we slowly realized that Britain, the ancient nation that it is, has never celebrated a ‘Platinum’ Jubilee before and would never again in our lifetime. It was a historical moment.

The Queen’s passing and period of mourning has given us an opportunity to reflect on her 70+ years of service and her commitment to ‘duty.’ The author Tina Brown, a longtime observer of the monarchy, asked the question: “Without the Queen, will anyone know how to be British anymore?” Elizabeth, she said was the “last well-behaved person in our coarsening, transactional world. Amid the clamor of ubiquitous narcissism, her cool refusal to impose her views or justify her choices was ineffably soothing.” And she was always ‘there.’

Britain received a new monarch and government at the same time; another historical first. It will be King Charles III, globalist and longest serving Prince of Wales, who must carry on the late Queen’s legacy. And unlike her late Majesty, we know where this King stands on many issues. He will slim down the monarchy, strengthen the Commonwealth and make the oldest institution in Britain more modern. When His Majesty and the Queen Consort visited Philadelphia to celebrate the Centennial of the Academy of Music, the couple visited all parts of the city, including a Mural Arts tour. During a seminar at The International House on housing policies in the developing world, the King discussed several examples of polices that worked and those that didn’t. Afterward, the students kept remarking on how knowledgeable and empathetic he was. He was described as ‘cool.’ They were right; he is.

Long live the King!”
